Day 4 : Becoming a Leader of Tomorrow.

The last day of Summit has arrived and along with it the final challenge of Team Olympics, that is, to build the largest freestanding structure made of marshmallows and spaghetti without eating all the supplies! Next it was off to a lecture by Harry Singha on Coaching. Then we all had the opportunity to contribute to the community by planting young trees on campus. The gesture of giving back, and the trees as a symbol of hope and future generations is having a significant impact on everyone. Up next  is our graduation party and award ceremony and it promises to be  an even more emotional event with comedy, prizes, an ice cream buffet, and event recap! Although we all are leaving tomorrow and no one wants it to be over.. Everyone is ready to start making a bigger difference and pay forward what we have learned at Global Youth Leadership Summit 2011!

Day 3: Building and Shaping Identities

Day 3 – Our perky participants started the day off running  with champion runner Stu Mittleman.  Team Olympics  followed supplying even more leadership practice and points for the award ceremony tomorrow!

The first lecture found our participants contemplating and commenting during another compelling talk by Marlon Smith on the Power of Choices. Anecdotes from Marlon’s own life highlighted how the choices that we make shape our own destiny. Next comedian Kathy Buckley prompted more laughter by having participants not only develop their own stand-up routines but get up onstage in front of their peers and do them! The routines were all about turning tough personal experiences into comedy and were universally hilarious. Felix Lin succeeded Kathy, by providing techniques essential to removing negative beliefs and creating new positive beliefs. Our Youth Coaches then took the stage to reveal how they have been using their G.Y.L.S. knowledge to contribute to their communities. What an incredible group of Leaders they are now! Next Brian Mayne imparted a great deal of wisdom on goal mapping and what is necessary to achieving your goals. Taking Action! What a great way to finish another outstanding day at Summit! One more day and everyone will be on their way home to make difference!

Day 2: Power of Personal Leadership

Today, our motivated participants woke up early to go running with Stu Mittleman who set the record for running across the entire United States of America. After a brisk start to the day, our participants went to breakfast, then headed off to get started on their team olympics.

Marlon joined us on stage in the main room for some excitement including a few spins on our prize wheel! Then we heard from a great speaker who herself is a GYLS alum, Katie Pitsis. Katie gave a presentation focused on the dangers associated with social networking and how to appropriately use popular social media services like Facebook and Twitter to connect with others. She also gave information on how to handle cyber bullying. After a picnic lunch, the participants got started on their team games. Gary King came back to present more great content this evening and we capped the night off with skits prepared by our Alumni participants. Another fantastic day at GYLS!

Day 1: Creating Resourceful States.

On Day 1 – the participants were fortunate to hear great content from some of our wonderful speakers including Kathy Buckley, a deaf comedian who is regularly asked to speak at events all over the world. Kathy focuses her speeches on finding humor in every aspect of life. Gary King also presented on the importance of integrity and honesty. The participants then went on to their team tattoo ceremonies (don’t worry – the tattoos are temporary… we hope… ).

Next came the board break. Participants were asked to take a board and write their limiting beliefs on one side – the things that hold them back from accomplishing their goals or make them insecure. They put a big X through the limiting beliefs. On the other side, the participants wrote their goal or something they are determined to achieve. Then, after some specific instruction, the participants had a breakthrough! They each had the opportunity to break through their limiting beliefs in order to reach their goals. This evening, we had a presentation by Anand Chulani who focuses on the importance of embracing the power of laughter and being comfortable with who you are. What a great day!
